Commfy started with a simple observation: the loneliness epidemic isn’t an individual failure. Systemic failures such as the disappearance of community spaces, commercialization of traditional third places, inadequate digital “solutions” built to serve advertisers rather than people, and lack of opportunities to organically connect outside of work, have made us a lonelier and more isolated society.

Having been an immigrant twice, Ramit, the founder of Commfy, experienced this first-hand. In spite of being an extrovert and from a metropolitan city like Mumbai, he found it incredibly hard to establish community first in the US, and then in the UK. Combined with the anecdotal experiences of other immigrants and locals, and his master’s research on the importance of third places for community and individual well-being, this became a problem deeply close to his heart that he wishes to solve.

The problem wasn’t that people didn’t want to connect. It was that the infrastructure for connection was broken. Community organisers had nowhere to find venues. Venues had no way to fill their empty spaces with purpose. And people looking for community had no reliable way to discover what was happening around them.

Of course, the solution is connection.
